Intact and healthy mangrove forests in El Salvador have an untapped potential for sustainable revenue-generating initiatives including ecotourism, sport fishing, and other recreational activities. Whereas unregulated development threatens mangroves — like mega tourism projects in Mexico, polluting industries in India and Vietnam , or large-scale shrimp aquaculture in many parts of the world — locally-led community development can offer economic growth without compromising coastal ecosystems.

Mangrove forests are extremely productive ecosystems, providing critical services that benefit all of us. EcoViva and our partners are working to build a Mangrove Resource Collaborative that will strengthen mangrove conservation by gathering community leaders, scientists, and policymakers around the common goal of creating sound coastal policy.

We love mangroves, and we hope you do too! I never knew so much about the importance of the mangroves until recently when we got support from the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund CEPF to restore community mangroves in Nigeria. Simon Torkington 12 Nov Estuarine habitats with coastal mangrove shorelines and tree roots are often important spawning and nursery territory for juvenile marine species including shrimp, crabs, and many sport and commercial fish species such as redfish, snook and tarpons.

Branches of the mangroves act as bird rookeries and nesting areas for coastal wading birds including egrets, herons, cormorants and roseate spoonbills. In some areas, red mangrove roots are ideal for oysters, which can attach to the portion of the roots that hang into the water. Endangered species such as the smalltooth sawfish, manatee , hawksbill sea turtle , Key Deer and the Florida panther rely on this habitat during some stage of their life cycle. Mangrove forests provide nature experiences for people such as birding, fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, and the therapeutic calm and relaxation that comes from enjoying peaceful time in nature.

They also provide economic benefits to communities as a nursery for commercial fish stocks. Unfortunately, there are many challenges that place mangrove forests under threat. Human impact such as dredging, filling, water pollution from herbicides and development can lead to mangrove erosion and habitat destruction.

When mangrove forests are cleared and destroyed, they release massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change.

An important part of our ongoing efforts to restore natural habitat at Blowing Rocks Preserve is the restoration of red mangroves to the shoreline. The importance of mangrove planting at our preserves cannot be understated, to help protect and restore this vital Florida treasure.

TNC continues protection and restoration efforts of our important forests , from the Panhandle to the Keys, on behalf of people and nature. We published a scientific study in partnership with University of California Santa Cruz and RMS quantifying the effectiveness of mangroves in reducing flood risk to people and property. In fact, over 40 bird, 10 reptiles, 1 amphibian, and 6 mammal species are only found in mangroves, the majority of which are found in Asia and Australia.

Mangroves are vital for millions of people Millions of people live close to and directly rely on mangroves for food, wood for building and fires, for income from fishing and tourism, and for mental and spiritual wellbeing. They provide benefits to and are used by societies across the world; irrespective of wealth, gender or age, in many communities all individuals routinely use and benefit from these amazing forests. Mangroves contribute to international goals for poverty reduction, gender equality and clean water and sanitation.
