Why does charmander hate ash

In the episode, Ash and his friends met a Charmander on a rock next to the road they were taking. He later helped Ash and Pikachu fight Team Rocket, after which Damian came and wanted to take it back, lying again that he had left it there to toughen it up.

Charmander and Ash quickly became good friends and Ash often used Charmander in battle, increasing its experience. But at that moment — their relationship changed! Charmeleon stopped being loyal to Ash and was often a disobedient maverick who would ignore and annoy Ash on purpose. Charmeleon was knocked over by an Aerodactyl, which made it upset. Hurt and embarrassed, Charmeleon wanted to fight and evolved into Charizard in the process.

Although Charizard saved Ash on that occasion, it continued itss disobedience. On the other hand, he enjoyed a fight against a strong opponent, which is why Ash — despite its behaviour — still kept it in his main roster. Charizard was with Ash during his Orange Islands adventures, although Ash tended not to use it if not necessary.

Later , Charmander used Flamethrower to torch a hole in the capsized St. Anne's hull, allowing the group and Team Rocket to escape the ship. He finally subdued his opponent by using Rage and Flamethrower.

Charmander made his Gym Battle debut in the next episode , where he defeated Erika 's Weepinbell after burning Razor Leaf and then striking a powerful Skull Bash.

However, in the next round, the pure stench emitting from her Gloom caused Charmander to choke and faint. He went up against Koga's Venomoth briefly before their match was interrupted by Team Rocket. The rise in Charmander's battle experience reached its peak in March of the Exeggutor Squad , where he helped stop a large number of rampaging Exeggutor. Subsequently, Charmander evolved into Charmeleon. However, in The Problem with Paras , it was revealed that Charmeleon was no longer loyal to Ash, attacking a Paras when Ash was trying to deliberately lose in order to help Paras evolve.

Cassandra's grandmother explained that Charmeleon's skill level had exceeded Ash's, and therefore he did not respect him. Ironically, a rampaging Charmeleon was stopped when Paras, desperately trying to avoid punishment, jabbed at him with a claw.

After evolving into Parasect , it put Charmeleon to sleep with Spore and allowed Ash to recall him. Cassandra's grandmother warned Ash that he needed to learn to control Charmeleon. When an Aerodactyl swooped past, knocking Charmeleon over, Charmeleon attempted to fight back.

He then jumped up and grabbed the escaping Aerodactyl's tail and followed it into the open air, but was soon shaken off. Upset, Charmeleon evolved into Charizard and flew after Aerodactyl to avenge his injured pride. When Jigglypuff began singing at Misty's request in a desperate attempt to save Ash, Charizard attempted to block out the sleep-bound effects of the song, to no avail.

Nonetheless, he managed to catch Ash and put him on the ground before going to sleep, but unfortunately, retained his disobedience afterward. Charizard's disobedience towards his Trainer began to cause Ash some serious problems during his journey , losing the Cinnabar Gym battle against Blaine in Riddle Me This , as he simply loafed off and allowed Rhydon an easy win after Charizard left the ring, causing Blaine to disqualify him from the match.

In the next episode , Charizard refused to help dam the volcano, but changed his mind after seeing Blaine's powerful Magmar contributing. After working together, the duo were left with a burning desire to test each other's strength. Blaine permitted a battle at the peak of the volcano, and the two seemed evenly matched.

Magmar dropped Charizard into the lava, but Charizard regained the upper hand by dazing Magmar with an aerial Submission attack and then knocking it out with his powerful Seismic Toss. The costliest incidence of Charizard's disobedience was in the battle against Ritchie during the Indigo League in Friend and Foe Alike.

However, when Sparky came out, Charizard condescendingly stomped the ground and flapped his wings against the little Pikachu before going to sleep, refusing to battle. Due to this, Ash lost the round and Ritchie advanced to the next round. While confronting Mewtwo 's original clones of the three Kanto starters in their final evolutions during Mewtwo Strikes Back , Ash summoned Charizard to fight alongside Corey 's Bruteroot and Neesha 's Shellshocker against the clones, although not before Charizard, to Ash's surprise, attempted to preemptively attack Mewtwo.

After Bruteroot and Shellshocker were quickly overpowered by their clones, Ash attempted to turn the tables by having Charizard focus on speed and evasion over raw power in his confrontation with the clone Charizard, but this strategy failed. Once Ash released the captured originals to confront the clones, Charizard battled the cloned Charizard once again but ended the battle to cry for Ash after his sacrifice to try and stop the battle between Mew and Mewtwo.

Ash took Charizard with him to the Orange Islands , despite his refusal to obey him. Ash had noticeably stopped trying to use him in battles, although in Navel Maneuvers , Charizard, Pikachu, and Bulbasaur were used in the second round of the match between Ash and Danny. Charizard was initially unwilling to participate, and Danny nearly won. However, Charizard inadvertently helped when he tried to use Flamethrower on Ash but missed and carved an ice pillar into a sled.

This meant Ash won the round and was able to continue the match. Charizard took down a boy's Tauros with a single attack, before flying away and rampaging the city. Ash was unable to recall him and only the intervention of Prima and her Slowbro using Disable allowed Ash to stop Charizard.

He blatantly refused to listen to Ash's commands, continuing to use Flamethrower despite it having no effect on Poliwrath. Tad and Poliwrath resisted all of them until Poliwrath responded with a Water Gun that nearly doused the flame on Charizard's tail. He was then encased in ice by Poliwrath's Ice Beam , much to Ash's horror. Ash managed to smash the ice encasing Charizard's head, and Tad walked away scornfully, telling Ash that they would have a rematch when he could control Charizard.

Ash lit a fire and thawed Charizard out, before rubbing Charizard all over to help him regain his body heat. Pikachu pointed out that Ash's hands were rubbed raw, but Ash replied that he didn't mind, and redoubled his efforts upon seeing that Charizard's tail flame was so small.

Charizard woke up in a panic and tried to attack, but he was so cold that he could not produce a flame and passed out again. Misty provided a blanket and Tracey kept the fires up while Pikachu watched the flame, but Ash himself worked throughout the entire night to help Charizard recover. The selfless act reminded Charizard of everything Ash had done for him since he was a Charmander.

Ash and Pikachu were briefly knocked out during the rescue, and Charizard became so incensed he learned Dragon Rage. He also proceeded to aid Ash alongside Squirtle by pulling a discarded metal part and even countered Moltres's flame blasts alongside Squirtle and Pikachu when the titans tried to attack them, although he was ultimately forced to return to his Pokeball after the titans simultaneously created a rift and a wall of ice barring Ash from continuing onward to Ice Island.

Charizard defeated Drake's Electabuzz by blocking its electricity with Fire Spin and knocking it out with Seismic Toss. He also fought Dragonite , but was hit by a powerful Water Gun and then Slammed into the ground.

After a clash of Dragon Rages, Charizard fainted, but his attacks had begun to wear Dragonite down, paving the way for Pikachu to finish it off and give Ash the victory. Charizard also accompanied Ash on his journey to the Johto region, although it became apparent that he was unfairly superior to most of Ash's early competition. Team Rocket later capitalized on Casey's frustration, calling Charizard an illegal choice by Ash.

His massive size compared to her came into effect when Chikorita ran towards him and tried to attack; Charizard responding by placing his foot out and blowing a small puff of fire after being instructed by Ash to only weaken her. Charizard's puff of fire ended up on Chikorita's single leaf and caused her to run around for a short amount of time before using Vine Whip to attack Charizard. Charizard was recalled by Ash after he and Chikorita fell into a large canvas of rocks.

Due to the latter's impressive Speed , Charizard started at a disadvantage, with Pidgeot's Whirlwind reflecting his Flamethrower back onto him. He was then knocked back down by a combination of Wing Attack and Quick Attack. Falkner told Ash to surrender but Ash refused and Charizard gained the strength to fight back and fly above Quick Attack. Blastoise ducked under Charizard's Dragon Rage and used Bite on its shoulder, but Charizard ignored the pain and smashed Blastoise into the ground with Seismic Toss.

Blastoise managed to stand, but after glaring at Charizard for a few moments it collapsed and fainted. Charizard was then used against Harrison's Blaziken in the quarterfinals. Therefore, both Charizard and his trainer were caught off guard by Blaziken's speed and power. Even Charizard's Seismic Toss wasn't enough to defeat Blaziken, though it crippled him badly, but when Charizard attempted to use another one it was caught off guard by Blaziken's Blaze Kick.

Charizard and Blaziken managed to stand up, but when Ash ordered Charizard to use another Flamethrower, the pain from Charizard's injuries overwhelmed it and it fainted. However, Charizard injured Blaziken badly enough to prevent Harrison from using it in the next round which caused Harrison to lose his next battle. In There's no Place Like Hoenn , Charizard's battle against Harrison's Blaziken was seen in a flashback when Max watches the actual footage of the Silver Conference during the battle between Ash and Harrison in the quarterfinals while he keeps mocking Ash from losing the second round of the competition.

Despite its type advantage, Articuno had the upper hand throughout most of the battle, recovering from Flamethrower and Dragon Breath remarkably quickly, and dodging all of Charizard's other attacks. It also revealed that it could use Water Pulse to counter its weakness to Fire-types and froze one of Charizard's wings with Ice Beam. Charizard used Overheat to melt the ice on its wing, allowing it to regain full mobility, but Articuno still managed to land a Steel Wing , which very nearly defeated the exhausted Charizard.

However, when Articuno attempted to finish Charizard with another Steel Wing, Charizard grabbed both wings and hurled Articuno to the ground with Seismic Toss, almost knocking itself out in the process. Articuno managed to get up and the referee was about to announce that it had won, but Noland told him to wait until he was sure the battle was over. Articuno fainted as Charizard got to his feet. Charizard was reunited with Ash in Gathering the Gang of Four!

During Ash's training camp, Charizard also shows its mischievous side when it slams itself through their resting ground, making Squirtle get angry. Charizard also dodges both Squirtle and Bulbasaur's attacks, but it accidentally hit Pikachu from its Razor Leaf, causing him to electrocute them with Thunderbolt despite Ash's pleas not to fight.

As they made a campfire at night, Ash also reminisces about Charizard back when he was abandoned as a Charmander and his disobedience from his evolutionary stages. Charizard also displays his Steel Wing ability as it managed to get all of the berries for them to eat and its training with Ash, Pikachu, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle. Both Charizard and Squirtle's attacks do not work at first, but for the second time, it manages to crack the balloon allowing Bulbasaur to destroy it with Razor Leaf.

Charizard snapped out of its confusion with some encouragement from Ash and hit Dusclops with a powerful Dragon Breath. Ash ordered Charizard to inflict what would have been the finishing blow if Dusclops hadn't been a Ghost-type, but it turned out that ordering Charizard to use Seismic Toss was a huge mistake.

Due to Dusclops' immunity to Fighting-type attacks, the Ghost-type escaped from Charizard's grasp and smashed it with a final devastating Shadow Punch. He goes to Professor Oak and exchanges his Unfezant for his Charizard.

When he was released by Ash to show it to Cilan , Iris and N , he and Pikachu are happy to see him, and Charizard gave him the usual Flamethrower greeting after Ash introduces his new friends. Iris is confident in her Dragonite but does not know how outmatched she was. Iris' hopes were quickly crushed when Charizard emerged unscathed from the attack and roared loudly. Dragonite, now knowing what it was going up against, retreated into the sky, but Charizard easily caught up and hit Dragonite with a super-effective Dragon Tail , dealing serious damage.

However, the battle was called off by N , because Dragonite was injured from the fall. Both Charizard and Dragonite gained their mutual respect with each other after their fierce battle. Iris was surprised that Dragon Rush didn't knock Charizard out, because she believed that it was super effective. Afterward, Ash decided he wanted Charizard to return to his party, and get him back on the grid, which Charizard gladly accepted.

Charizard's Slash scores a hit, and Charizard quickly dodged the upcoming Ice Beam. Flamethrower is blocked by a powered up Thunder Punch, but Dragonite takes a small amount of damage, despite the enhanced power. Dragonite's enhanced speed allowed it to dodge Charizard's Dragon Tail, but the battle ended when Colress's machine is destroyed.

In Meowth, Colress and Team Rivalry! Charizard, however, simply throws Pignite with a giant swing, which does not work. Pignite was saddened by his condition, until Iris picks a single leaf grass to make him sneeze out the seed shells from Cilan's Pansage's Bullet Seed, making Cilan had caused the accident. When Ash asks both Charizard and Pikachu about Pignite's Flamethrower, which both of them agreed on, and Charizard blows him with its own Flamethrower on the face.

Charizard and Pignite are seen blowing their Flamethrowers, and Charizard's Flamethrower is much stronger than Pignite's.

It used a spinning Dragon Tail to break through the ground, while Oshawott used Hydro Pump to soften it, allowing Krookodile to Dig out. He was used to battle Team Plasma , where he easily withstood several attacks, and with Pignite, launched a devastating double Flamethrower. In The Pirates of Decolore! This makes Ash return him back to his Ball.

This can show that the badges go beyond just receiving them. Like a leader can just say "here you go" and drop it in your pocket, that doesn't mean you showed your ability as a trainer. Ash sends out Charmeleon and thinks of Charmeleon's mindset, he's thinking "I'm evolved, I'm powerful, let's do this" he even looks ready to battle.

But what's the first thing Ash tells him? ANY chance Ash had at controlling Charmeleon was gone right there. Charmeleon looks ready but once Ash tells it to lose, that's when Charmeleon looks pissed and glares at Ash then goes on a rampage.

Even further in the episode, Ash shows no control, he just shows weakness and does nothing to stop or control Charmeleon. Pikachu is the one who has to step in and stop him. The final thing to note is that Charmander had a previous owner, Damian so technically it's a "traded" pokemon which have a higher rate of disobedience. Oak saying about Charmander: you should raise him patiently. In other words, the game states it's not easy to raise Charmander and needs a lot of patience to raise it well of course that in the game mechanics, it's less effective than in the anime.

In the anime, Ash's Charmander is found abandoned by Damien, saying that "but that puny thing was so weak it couldn't even beat the weakest opponent. Oak in the game. So since Charmander was abandoned, it may cause a terrific change in his attitude with humans at the evolution with the next material, since not raised properly from the beginning.

And the reason for that, since the anime introduces a different approach to evolution, as in Advanced Challenge season ep26 "Exploud And Clear", a boy named Guy has a Loudred, and once evolved to Exploud, his entire behavior changed by not taking orders from Guy.

When Guy asked the gang about the evolution changing personality, Brock tells him confidently "Absolutely, when a pokemon evolves, it goes through a lot of changes.

You'll not only notice a personality change but also in its abilities too. Strange enough, in the first season when Ash's Charmander evolved, Brock didn't say that, but probably his claiming is directly from Charmeleon behavior changes.

In that episode, eventually, Guy is protecting Exploud from Team Rocket, and then gain his Exploud trust again, with a less than half episode, Ash's Charmeleon and Charizard though, had been a lot of time together from the half of Indigo League through the Orange Islands, taking much more time than Guy and his Exploud, probably not only because Charmeleon's fast evolution but because of the above, making himself less trust in Ash's orders 'til see himself as equal with him.
